What is my Dosha type?

In Ayurveda, from the great elements; forms Doshas. These are present in nature through the seasons, our stage of life, mind and physical body.

We all are born with a dominant dosha (prakruti) which is our nature. However, all doshas are present in the body and govern our state of health and well being, mindset and perception, our natural talents and gifts, etc. When the dosha moves or becomes imbalanced, this is referred to as vrukuti.

If we allow the dosha to run from its nature for too long, we disconnect from our own true nature. Like the chakra system, part of the energy body - dosha’s are not physical in the sense but they do express themselves physical.

The 3 Doshas are:

  • Vata (Space/Air)

  • Pitta (Fire/Water)

  • Kapha (Water/Earth)

Today’s day and age, it is common for our prukruti to be a mix of two doshas. However, there will surely be one slightly more dominant and this can be considered your main dosha.

It is important to know our dosha does not change; rather it will express itself differently if the elements and other doshas are disrupted. Like the elements, doshas work in harmony.

Each doshas qualities differ, but there will be some that are similar. Noted by Dr. Vasant Lad here are some below:

Vata -dry, light, cold, subtle, rough, moving, clear
Pitta - oily, sharp, hot, light, sour, fluid
Kapha - cold, oily, heavy, slow, smooth, dense

Take a moment, if you were to describe your mind, the way you communicate, your digestion, your metabolism - do any of these qualities stand out?

Doshas have energetic qualities that work with the physical parts of us. So while we have a dominant dosha (also know as constitution); all doshas are found in all of us, and in particular regions of the body.

Vata - colon/pelvic area
Pitta - small intestine
Kapha- chest & stomach

Noting any issues in this region of the body can help us determine if another dosha is affecting or creating a disturbance.

To understand your dosha in depth, it is best to speak with a practitioner or Ayu-certified professional. There is so much to learn based on your nature and your disconnection from it. But one thing for sure is, when you do take notice and act accordingly; it’s like walking back home. It connects your mind and body to who you are - and from there you can explore the gifts of your dosha.

Each dosha has it’s own uniqueness to it - and can bring individuals some clarity even; based on their nature of what their dharma (or purpose) may be in this lifetime.

There is a lot to understand about the Doshas, but for now - let me know your thoughts on what you THINK your dosha may be below!

Stay tuned to learn about Doshas and the seasons, dosha balances/ imbalances and preferred foods/tastes for each dosha.

Namaste,
